Warning about the minor emergency center at CTMC

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up so they can avoid what happened to my wife. She had a minor illness that required only a basic antibody to cure. Because it was the weekend, she was going to go to the minor emergency center that used to be near Half-Price Books. We have been there many times before and it costs around $60 to be seen. When she found that it was shut down, she was going to go to a similar center in New Braunfels, but decided to check out the new "minor emergency center" at San Marcos' own CTMC. She made sure to ask the staff there if it would be a charge like the regular hospital and was assured that no, it was billed like a traditional minor emergency center. Based on this assurance, she went and saw the doctor for about three minutes and got her meds. Well, imagine our surprise when the bill came for more than $1000, with us being responsible for the more than $200 that was not covered by our insurance. We called to complain and were dismissed with a "too bad." Please spread the word about this scam being perpetuated on the people of San Marcos. Drive to Austin or New Branfels if you need a minor emergency center, where they are not out to rip you off.

Political Sign Recycling Program in San Marcos Successful

The San Marcos political landscape is a lot cleaner this year, thanks in part to a new sign recycling program sponsored by Sustainable San Marcos and Green Guy Recycling. Because the plastic used in political signs is not usually accepted at recycling centers, candidates’ only option before this year was the landfill. This spurred Sustainable San Marcos board member Tom Wassenich to locate a source that would accept the plastic; Daniela De Jongh, chair of the Sustainable San Marcos recycling committee directed the recycling effort that started in earnest the day after the Nov. 4th elections.
Green Guy served as the drop off location for candidates and residents. “The program was planned for 10 days, but as residents learned about it we received signs for over a month,” said Kyle Hahn of Green Guy.
The plastic was bailed and taken to Cycled Plastics in Austin for recycling. In total 1839 lbs. of plastic were diverted from the landfill, 1339 lbs. over what a similar program in Austin recycled. The total amount represents roughly 360 small yard signs and 520 highway signs. In addition, organizations and individuals have found creative uses for the weather-resistant plastic and many signs will be reused by candidates in future campaigns. Other materials collected such as cardboard, wood stakes, metal wires and screws were all reused or recycled.
“We were impressed by the number of candidates that took time to recycle their campaign materials” said Betsy Robertson, chair of Sustainable San Marcos, “and we hope to see an even greater response in future campaigns”. Sustainable San Marcos is a local non-profit organization focused on promoting sustainability and green policies in the San Marcos, Texas area. Our mission is to provide useful information to help the San Marcos community live in a more efficient and thoughtful manner in their homes or places of business, and offer ways to help us move our community towards sustainability.

Narvaiz Claims Victory After Recount

Mayor Susan Narvaiz was returned to a third term after a marathon recount delayed her scheduled swearing in but did not change the final vote tally. She is expected to take the office’s oath within the hour.
Susan NarvaizAt 7:30 p.m., Hays County elections officials announced that Narvaiz won 6,451 votes, 50.08 percent, to Newman’s 3,868, 30.03 percent, while Texas State University student Dan McCarthy took 2,563 votes, 19.9 percent. Newman requested the recount this week because of the nine votes that stood between him and the opportunity to take on Narvaiz in a runoff election.
The recount started at 10 a.m. this morning and stretched through the morning in afternoon. At 5 p.m., as planned, city council member Chris Jones was sworn to a second term and former planning and zoning chair Fred Terry to his first. But the council recessed the meeting to await the recount’s outcome, affording rare suspense to a ceremony typically that is usually little more than formality.

Grande Cuts Service to San Marcos For 6 Hours. No 911. No Refunds.

Last night Grande cut service to San Marcos leaving customers without cable, internet and telephone (including 911) for six hours.
When called they offered no refund for the down time to their customers.

Sustainable San Marcos needs help cleaning up campaign signs!

Sustainable San Marcos is organizing a campaign sign recycling program for San Marcos and the surrounding communities. Political signs usually end up in the landfill since this material is not accepted through curbside recycling or at the city’s drop off center. This year Sustainable San Marcos has partnered with Green Guy and Cycled Plastics in Austin to recycle around 2500 signs between local and national elections.We are calling for volunteers to help us at the drop off center. Signs need to be prepared for recycling, removing any stickers, metal wire and wood stakes from the plastic.
There are many time slots to fill and we are only asking you to contribute 2 hours. Volunteers are needed for:
Wednesday Nov 5 - Thursday Nov 6 - Friday Nov 7 - Saturday Nov 8
10am to 12pm
12pm to 2 pm
2pm to 4 pm
Select the time that works best for you and write a message with your info in the Sustainable San Marcos Facebook event page following this link or call 512.787.8170.

Pretty interested to see this commentary. I wonder if it was wrote on tax payer time? I'm losing more and more respect for our Police force. We have more LEO per citizen then almost every single Texas city, your surprised there might need to be cuts. Pathetic. What a shrill for the Dictator in Office.
