Report A Problem

Chris Jones was elected to city council two years ago while he was still an undergraduate at Texas State. Recently he was working in Austin, which meant he commuted back and forth.
Last week he started a job at Texas State. He works as a career advisor in the Career Services division. The goal of this division is to help students and Grads find jobs.
So if Kim Porterfield wins, then two city council Reps will work at Texas State. If Jude Prather also wins, then three city council reps will be connected to Texas State.

Dang, you got us. See we thought that we could operate under the assumption that people could participate in the democratic process without having to justify either being good at what they do or where they work. However we just couldn't slink past the ever vigilant anonymous posters here at 78666.com

Now they you're on to us here's the whole plan. After our revolution which takes over the city council a junta will be established. Texas State telescreens will be installed at every home. If people don't stand during the Bobcat fight song members of Boko's truth squad will be paying you a visit. We'd better see you at Texas State athletic events too or a little re-education might be in order. We're having the camps built as I type out in West Campus. And you thought that was just going to be another parking garage. We're doing the Ministry of Love Bobcat style baby!

Of course dictatorial regimes and re-education only take us half the way there. What we really need are pod people. Our biology department has been working around the clock on pod replicates for every man woman and child in this town that isn't associated with Texas State. I mean forced confessions are reigns of terror are fun and all, but after a point it's nothing but work work work. Pod people are far more efficient and we think we'll get more bang for our oppressive buck this way.

This was all going to go so well, but you got us. We're busted. Now that you all have cracked this case might I humbly suggest you turn your collective attention towards all the other great unsolved crimes in this nation. The possibilities are endless. You might find Jimmy Hoffa. You might figure out who really shot Kennedy.

Or (and this is my most fervent hope) you might locate a clue and get off this BS train of thought and, once again, get over yourselves.

Wow. What a professional, non-inflammatory, uniting reply.

Is there a write-in candidate? You're all making me nauseous.

I was a student here, long before I was a non-student, so I guess I am qualified to speak from both sides of the issue.

1. Not all students are part of the problem.
2. Not all non-students are student-haters (even if they don't back your candidate).
3. Some students are part of the problem.
4. Some non-students are student-haters.
5. I have rarely (ever?) considered the interests of my employer, when voting or participating in local politics, so why would any of these candidates? MAYBE a property manager would make decisions that benefit property managers. MAYBE. But a university employee putting the interests of the university first? Very unlikely, especially given how frequently people change employers.

6. Don't tell me to get over it and I won't tell you to get over it. If you are a student, you have every right to participate, but if people have knee-jerk reactions to students, you have to give some thought to why that is. Most of the complaints I see, revolve around noise, drunk driving, speeding and littering, i.e. a small set of people who show no respect for the rest of us (other students included). It's not unreasonable to ask that people not do these sorts of things. If you don't do any of this stuff, congratulations, you are part of the solution. If you can influence others to do the same, even better. If you do some of this stuff, give yourself a big frowny-face sticker, because you are part of the problem.

6a. If you're a non-student and your knee-jerk reaction is to blame all of society's ills on students, you're part of the problem too.

7. If you're a candidate and you are insulting the other candidate, their supporters or the forum in which you are given free reign to say whatever you want, at best, you are a fool and we don't need any more fools in office, thank you very much.
