Council Wants You To Pay For Others Internet Access – At Cost of The Economy As Well 11/30/2007
By: Chris Add A Picture Report A Problem
The City of San Marcos is making plans to install a citywide wireless Internet system all paid for by taxpayer money.
Some local business owners are not happy and say this will hurt their business. Wireless Internet is an incentive for some local business owners to attract customers and having a free system all paid for by the tax payer will hurt their business.
The city will have a public forum for the community to express their opinions over this next year. Some say with San Marcos in need of funds for so many other projects why should we be forced to pay for other’s the use the Internet for free especially when it will hurt local businesses?

COMMENTS Name: semi-native | Is this free to use, or do we pay taxes to build it and then pay a fee to use it? If it is free to use, then what is the incentive to pay for Internet access at home or at the office? That would kill Grande and Century, plus that stupid cable company I haven't bothered with in years.
So, it must be pay per use.
I'm not sure I see how it will benefit the city, other than being a neat buzzword. Maybe it would attract employers, because employees would think this is a neat place to live.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of other issues to address before we'll really be a neat place for those employees to live.
Of course, I'd rather pay for wireless for the city, than help fund the move to IA athletics for Texas State.

"The group also pinpointed the need for additional funding from student athletic fees, as well as increases in money generated from other sources such as capital gifts from businesses and individuals as well as support from the city of San Marcos through a hotel/motel tax or other sources of revenue."

| Name: Immis | I don't think its going to be "free". It will be a low cost system to make it affordable to all the residents. Corpus has it in place and it is awesome. I think parts of Houston have it as well. I think its a good deal and in the long run its suppose to save the city some money.
All in all I think its a good deal. There has been discussion about this for over a year already. |
| Name: Bill | | This has been under discussion for over a year, that is correct. It will help with communications (including emergencies) for the City. The 2 to 6 million dollar price tag would be paid by the tax payer. I agree with the folks that think the City could better use OUR money to build infrastructure for the coming growth. I heard recently that we have outgrown our waste water facility and will need a new one at a cost of $25,000,000 +++. Our Council should go back to Government 101 and RE-LEARN what the purpose of City Government really is. Give me streets, sewer, water, police and fire protection and stay out of anything you can find in the yellow pages. Then, just leave me alone. That would lower our taxes and serve the entire community, not just the few that will benefit from the "city wide internet", concerts in the park, below market memberships at the exclusive activity center or overlook "green space" from our high value homes. I for one am tired of paying for all these things for a very few to enjoy. Give me a break. |
