Give Me A Break 11/03/2007

Judging by most of the posts on this board some of you think that the students of this town, especially those that choose to participate in civic involvement, are very bad people. Moreover, there is a strong anti-student bias that just reeks out through my monitor.
Get over yourselves...please.
Every person that lives, works, and learns in this town is has a right to participate in the political process. Your collective paranoia helps nobody and makes San Marcos look like a xenophobes paradise.
Whats so bad about Jude Prather or Kim Porterfield running for office? Is the Texas State logo on them tantamount to a scarlet letter? Kim has lived in this town for decades. Jude owns property. Yet the absurd stigma some of you attach to their association to the school paints a bleak picture.
I dont know why many of you don't care for Texas State and frankly I don't care. I am a student and I have lived in this town for 4 years now. I plan on staying here as long as I can too. I like this town. I pay my taxes. I contribute to the economy. I participate in politics. I mind my civic duty.
Yet, I have to keep seeing absurd suggestions like age requirements to serve on the council. I have to watch people like Gaylord Bose lie to the student body when asked a pertinent question (sure he knows nothing about the task force...right). I have to hear about a baseless cheap shot against Jude by some little flunky that questioned his military service. Thats so classy folks. Way to go. I wonder if the person that posed that little gem ever had the guts to put on a uniform? If so they should know better.
Texas State has been in San Marcos, in some form, for over a century. It will be here for another century, as will the students. So, once again, get over yourselves. We all live here and the students of this university will be as involved as they choose to be. You can like it or lump it.
Of course the mature thing to do is work together, which is all we ever asked for in the first place. We aren't unreasonable but we want our seat at the table as is our right. We are equals and we will not be treated as anything less. The more some people try to deny us our rights the harder we will fight for them. |
