According to the Texas State website Kim Porterfield is currently employed as the "Director of Community Relations".

http://www.txstate.edu/community/about/Staff.html

Why does Kim Porterfield not make this fact really well known?

Is she trying to hide this from the voters?

Does she feel the voters might think someone employed directly for Texas State might be a pawn for the University's interests and not the interest of the residents of San Marcos?

Perhaps whoever wrote this doesn't have access to a map but the last time I checked Texas State is in San Marcos, and that makes the people the live, learn, and work here citizens of San Marcos. Where she works makes no difference. However, it might be worth asking how many jobs Texas State has brought to San Marcos in the last 100 years and how much this school contributes to the local economy.

I think a little gratitude might be in order.

What? Hello, Chris? What rock have you been living under? How could you possibly think that Kim Porterfield would be "hiding " her employment?

I can't imagine too many people being in a more high profile role than Kim Porterfield at Texas State University -- her passion for more than 14 years has been community service, community development, education, and working with entities to make this town a better place.
No, she has not simply been appointed to boards on which she would sit and pass judgment and piously determining which of us will be the "haves" and who will be the "have-nots."
Her proven record of community commitment speaks for itself.

She has never, in the nearly 30 years I have known her, drawn lines between the "thems" and the "us." There are no lines in her San Marcos. Our city is our neighborhood. And one does not have to go to monthly meetings to "count" as a member of a neighborhood.

Kim has proven to been among the first in the trenches -- working and sweating for the good of the community - for ALL of us.

When she chose to run for office, Kim didn't have to go to a map to find neighborhoods beyond her own in which to block-walk. She didn't have to introduce herself to citizens and explain where she comes from. Kim knows San Marcos. She has worked and lived in this community for nearly 30 years. She IS our neighbor and understands that real neighborhoods are not clearly defined on zoning maps. Kim's neighbors live in all corners of San Marcos.

Perhaps her efforts for One San Marcos cross lines that are uncomfortable for some-- because those lines are a bit blurred for Kim -- she has been a student, a renter, a homeowner, a parent, an employee, a volunteer, and most importantly, a good citizen of San Marcos and Hays County. She represents ONE San Marccos.

She recognizes, as do others in this town who have actually stepped up to WORK for a better San Marcos, that a single person can make a difference.

So there you go -- Valiant attempt, "Chris No-Last-Name"... but a little weak on the mudslinging... perhaps if you spent a little more time in the trenches - helping those citizens who live beyond the borders of YOUR neighborhood, you would have recognized that this dog won't hunt.

Be a citizen. Make a difference. Vote on Tuesday. Select a candidate and stand behind her. But, "Chris," don't start slinging mud at this point. The university is not the big bad wolf in this story. Nor is Kim Porterfield.

Check out her reputation. Ask some of the people she has helped. Ask some of the people she has worked with. You won't have to look far. She has worked with and helped people in ALL neighborhoods of San Marcos. And that is what she hopes to continue to do on the City Council. Vote Kim Porterfield for Place 1.

I will!

(PS-- Chris, in case you were hoping to discredit me, I will let the cat out of the bag. I, too, am proud to work for the University. I have also worked for the City, owned a business and been a journalist in this community. And yes, I am a current student at Texas State - one who lives in a neighborhood! More importantly, I have lived here for nearly 50 years. As a lifelong member of this community, I have a lot vested in San Marcos. And I look forward to representation for ALL residents when Kim is elected to Place One on the San Marcos City Council.)

I just became aware of this blog and after reading some of the posts, I felt compelled to respond, although I prefer to communicate with people personally, directly. So if you have questions about me, my motivations for seeking a council position, or the approach I would take in making decisions, give me a call or send me an e-mail. You can call me at 618.8711 or e-mail me at kimforcouncil@gmail.com.

I am proud to work at Texas State University and have never tried to hide that fact. I have handed out or mailed more than 6,000 pieces of campaign “literature” which mention not just my current employment at Texas State, but also my former position at the San Marcos CISD and even my ancient history as a reporter for the San Marcos “Almost” Daily Record. In my opening remarks at the League of Women Voters Debate (which you can watch on Time Warner Cable!), I bragged about my job and my involvement in such programs as Bobcat Build, Pack it Up and Pass in On, and in the numerous college awareness tours we do for local youth. And here is the opening paragraph of my guest editorial to the University Star, which ran on October 24:

“I came to San Marcos from Houston in 1979 to attend college. I might as well have died and gone to heaven. I’ve been blessed to raise my family and further my career here.
Now that career allows me to work with Texas State University students to do great things: Bobcat Build, Pack It Up, and dozens of other student initiatives.”

Some of my campaign stuff, doorknob hangers and the most recent postcard, didn’t mention my job because I felt it was more important to include other information, like the early voting locations, or the endorsement of the San Marcos Police Officers Association. My job is a big part of my life, but it doesn’t define who I am as a person.

If you think I’m not fit to represent this city because I work at Texas State, or because I live in a different neighborhood than you … then don’t vote for me. But don’t presume to know me without having talked to me, and don’t cast aspersions on my character.

I want to get beyond this “us vs. them” mentality. I want to represent everyone in San Marcos, no matter where you live or work. I want to help bring our town together.
