We have a serious problem in our education system with High School drop out rates. What kind of message are we sending to our children when the highest public servant in office is held by a High School drop out. A person who never even got her Diploma instead opting for the GED.

Well, this just changed my vote from her to Dave Newman. No wonder San Marcos lacks leadership.

I don't think THAT disqualifies her from office. However, she obviously isn't representative of a university town. What disqualifies her is lack of leadership, lack of innovation, a bad attitude (throwing flammable comments on top of the "dog" incident) and lying about her "accomplishments".

I've come to an election conclusion, that it matters not whether a candidate has a GED (Ms.Navariz) or a Masters degree (Mr. Newman)...what I am for are term limits. City council should be limited to two terms otherwise they become professional politicos and do not serve at the pleaure of the community but serve at the pleasure of their over inflated EGOS!

For citizens that are "newcomers," ask locals about the reign of Mayor Kathy M. I think that you can connect the fractal dots, SN is nothing more than KM part TWO. I think that part two is a macabe/horror/comedy, especially when you consider that our current recession is estimated to be digging holes in our financial backyards for a min. of two years.

I have done my research and will not be touting the current mayor to my associates voting on the outskirts of SM's ETJ.

I don't think the lack of a diploma, in and of itself, disqualifies her. I don't think it even sets a bad example. She has overcome some real challenges and that is noteworthy.

I do think that it contributes to her lack of concern over our public schools, our dropout rate and the relatively few students who are on track to go to college. That bothers me.

I appreciate what she (and many others) achieve without formal education, but I do not want to allow those achievements to devalue education. Our citizens deserve the best education we can provide for them. They aren't getting it now.

Did your research tell you that your associates on the outskirts of the SM ETJ are ineligible to vote for City Council candidates?

Yep term limits. great idea. Then we can have the same good government SA has. Two term limits means at least half the council really doesn't have to care what the voters think. It also means no one on council knows enough about how city government works to disagree with city staff about how to run the city.

Mayor Narvaiz overcame her past educational choices by earning her GED. Many people in San Marcos study diligently to earn a GED, just visit the San Marcos Public Library on Tuesday & Thursday nights and peek into the Adult learning Center to see the popularity of the program. Many of these folks go on to college as well. Public school may not be the answer for everyone, but it doesn't mean you cannot be a leader in your community without finishing high school. Mayor Narvaiz has also been the notable speaker at GED graduations for the past several years and is a source of encouragement to those who hear her speak at this annual event.

Sure elememtry education may not be for everybody i.e. Susan Navariz, but following that same logic then one may conclude that a college eduction or any other formal system was also not tailor made for the Mayor.

My ETJ friends own property w/in city and pay huge property taxes and have extended families and employees who live and vote in San Marcos.

I think that if the current Mayor had a PHD in economics she would still make the same stupid mistakes due to her motavation being personal in nature and having NOTHING to do with serving the citizens of San Marcos.

I think this is even more of a reason to applaud the Mayor for everything she has done. She has accomplished so much more than alot of people in this town that do have degrees! Good Job Mayor Susan! Keep it Up!!

Is that you daniel dan mccarthy posing as "martian" ?

I have already voted to give her more available time to make public speeches on anything she wishes.

Neither of my parents had any high school time. Mom had an 8th grade education. Dad had a 4th grade education. They had to pitch in to support their siblings since their parents were all illiterate. Dad worked 18 hour days until his body wore out after 58 years. They realized that in life the only means to betterment was via a good education. They instilled in me a desire to fulfill their nixed dream of not only completing a primary education but continuing through a secondary. Hey, I wasn't an alter boy and partied as hardy as anyone but in my mind and heart, failure was not an option. I was going to complete their foremost desire and dream for me, whatever it took. Ironically, I was the well educated parent that did not instill the same heart-felt desire in my children who are both drop outs from Hays County Schools. I long cast blame on our demoralized and unempowered public school systems but in retrospect it came down to my failure to properly parent and inspire the dropout. My dropouts were not the product of a history of generational failings and inbreeding. My dropouts were the product of a well educated, affluent household where we all had too many distractions deflecting each other from that foundational, quality time that cements compation for others, inspires us to better contribute to our families and community, bolsters confidence that you can do anything that you want to do if you only really try. I failed at being an achievement enabler, a coach or an exhorter. You know this mayor may have a better perspective on the imperative of education than you or I.

Even though I voted for Dave Newman, this is a really poor pointed attack on our current mayor. I know plenty of people with doctorates, masters, bachelors etc. and they're complete idiots. Education doesn't always come from an institution, there are plenty of self educated folks out there that are competent and doing fine. Knowing this actually makes me have a little more respect for our mayor. There was obviously a rough point in her life where a GED was a solution to her finishing her education. She's obviously on the ball if she can be mayor of a small city and be reelected with a GED. Good for her. Aside from that, it wouldn't be much of a Democracy if only college graduates could run for office.

MAYOR ITS NOT TO LATE TO GET A HIGH DIPLOMA. SET A GOOD EXAMPLE

Name: Pamela Rose

Obviously you don't know much about her. Some things can't be taught in school like ethics, integrity, business sense, common sense and general people savvy. If it is true that she lacks a high school diploma, then I applaud her for not allowing it to hold her back from serving her community with her many talents and high moral standards.
Do you know that a mayor of San marcos does not recieve a salary? She supports herself with her own business. That's WORK ETHIC, and a lot of high school grads should follow that example.

Name: Arthur

Many positions doese not require a degree or diploma to do the job. Colleges does not teach common sense and certainly does not teach wisdom. These are learned behaviors through lifes teachings. It makes me proud to know that we had someone that could break the barriers and show that a degree is not always the best answer. Susan Did her job even if the citizens did not like or support her views and policies. IF this was an issue, why then did the citizens put her back in office for three terms? What's the problem?
