"San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz attended the Oct. 30 ASG meeting to clarify statements made by council members Betsy Robertson and Gaylord Bose regarding a Sagewood Circle taskforce and relocation of a proposed hotel. Providing incorrect information to prospective voters is not a good thing and ultimately hurts the candidate running for office. Voters will find out the truth and choose whom to represent them accordingly. However, The Star wonders whether this reason was enough to call for a change in attitude by ASG toward endorsing candidates."

Is it even legal for an organization that receives funds from a State University to endorse a candidate for public office?

Individual members are able to but I don't believe the organization can legally.

Brete, I do not know the legalities and I suggest you refer questions to an attorney. I do know that the University Star receives state funds and makes endorsements although I can assure you I am acutely aware there are First Amendment implications in the case of press (and quite possibly of a representative body like Associated Student Government, as well).

I thought of other issues along these lines... I could be wrong in that the neither the University Star nor ASG receive state funds in that their primary funding is through allocations of per-semester-hour student service fees. In the case of the newspaper, they certain receive advertising dollars as well so that may make a difference. I do not know if ASG has other sources of income besides it student service fee allocation.

Good response Brad. Mostly just poking the ASG types, for a knee jerk response, to see if their still the self righteous, whiny types they were back in the day.

It's sad what has happened to the Star, back in the early 80s it rivaled the Daily Texan for quality journalism and the Texan was a lot better back then (much better than the Statesman).
